    Boron carbide (B4C) is an important ceramic material with wide applications in civil, aerospace and military fields. Its most notable feature is its exceptional hardness, second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride. Additionally, boron carbide has low density, high melting point, high-temperature strength, and impressive chemical stability. It also has excellent neutron absorption capacity, thermoelectric properties and low expansion coefficient, and is suitable for manufacturing bulletproof armor, cutting tools, acid and alkali resistant materials, thermocouples, and atomic reactor control and shielding materials. It is worth noting that researchers have also begun to study boron carbide coatings due to their excellent properties.

    The sintering temperature of boron carbide is high and the covalent bond is strong, making the sintering of B4C ceramics a difficult task. In addition, the sintered boron carbide ceramics are difficult to process due to their extremely high hardness and poor toughness.
