What is the bulletproof principle of ceramic materials?

2024-08-01

In everyone's impression, ceramics are fragile. However, after being processed by modern technology, ceramics have been transformed into a new hard and high-strength material, especially in the field of bulletproof materials that require special physical properties, ceramics have become a very popular bulletproof material.

What is the bulletproof principle of ceramic materials?

The basic principle of armor protection is to consume the energy of the projectile, slow it down and make it harmless. Most traditional engineering materials, such as metal materials, absorb energy through plastic deformation of the structure, while ceramic materials absorb energy through micro-crushing process.

The energy absorption process of bulletproof ceramics can be roughly divided into three stages.

(1) Initial impact stage: The projectile hits the ceramic surface, making the bullet blunt, and absorbs energy in the process of crushing the ceramic surface into small and hard fragments;

(2) Erosion stage: The blunted projectile continues to erode the fragments, forming a continuous layer of ceramic fragments;

(3) Deformation, crack and fracture stage: Finally, tensile stress is generated in the ceramic to cause the ceramic to break, and then the back plate deforms, and the remaining energy is all absorbed by the deformation of the back plate material. In the process of the projectile hitting the ceramic, both the projectile and the ceramic are damaged.
